IMPACT (Innovative Methods for wave energy Pathways Acceleration through novel Criteria and Test rigs) is a collaborative research and innovation project involving five European partners that aims to develop and demonstrate a next generation testing approach for Wave Energy Converters (WECs). The proposed 250kW Dual Hardware-in-the-loop (DHIL) testing platform is based on a technology that expands the capabilities of the existing Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) technique. This will be supported by clear, quantitative, test-derived metrics, including techno-economic and environmental impact assessments of WECs. The project is coordinated by VGA, Srl (Italy), with the following project partners: Yavin Four Consultants (Portugal), SINTEF Energy Research (Norway), SINTEF Ocean (Norway) and University College Cork (Ireland). This project received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101007071.

IMPACT is a European collaborative research and innovation project focused on improving how Wave Energy Converters (WECs) are tested. Its work centered on developing and demonstrating a next-generation Dual Hardware-in-the-Loop (DHIL) approach, designed to extend established Hardware-in-the-Loop testing techniques. The project proposed a 250 kW DHIL testing platform to support assessment of WEC reliability and performance, as well as destructive testing. By advancing testing methods, IMPACT aimed to help accelerate the development of wave energy technology.
The project brought together five partners from four European countries. It was coordinated by VGA Srl in Italy, alongside Yavin Four Consultants in Portugal, SINTEF Energy Research and SINTEF Ocean in Norway, and University College Cork in Ireland. IMPACT concluded on 30 June 2024. Its website provides access to project results, including a final report, a report on innovative approaches to rig testing, press releases, and outputs and deliverables hosted in the project’s Zenodo community. The site also shares news, technical information about DHIL, and updates on the partners’ ongoing work.
