About Institute of Marine Research
The Institute of Marine Research (Havforskningsinstituttet, or HI) is one of Europe’s largest marine research institutes, with approximately 1,030 employees. Based in Norway, it provides scientific knowledge to support the sustainable management of marine ecosystems and resources, including the journey from sea to table. Its core activities are research, advice and monitoring.
HI studies marine species, seafood, aquaculture, and ocean, coastal and fjord environments. It collects and shares research data, runs projects and doctoral programmes, and publishes reports, survey records and other resources. The institute also provides practical guidance, including fishing quota recommendations, advice on seafood safety and aquaculture, and knowledge for marine and coastal management.
Fieldwork is supported by research vessels, national survey programmes, a reference fleet, laboratories and research stations in Austevoll, Flødevigen, Matre and Tromsø. HI communicates its findings through articles, events and regular news updates, helping public authorities and others make informed decisions about Norway’s seas and marine resources.
