Bob Brown House & Independence Homes is a nonprofit housing organization serving adults with physical and mental challenges in Central Kentucky. Founded in Lexington in 1975 as Lexington Housing for the Handicapped, it was created to offer low-income men and women a safe, affordable way to live independently. Rent is based on income, helping make housing accessible to people who may be unable to afford traditional homes or other disability-focused housing.
The organization provides supported, community-based living in a protected environment where residents can build independence and a sense of belonging. Its housing includes the original Bob Brown House in Lexington, 24 additional units at Independence Homes on Cleveland Road, opened in 2021, and Powder Branch Farm in Mount Sterling, which opened in 2025. The organization’s approach emphasizes a welcoming community in which residents are treated as family.
Bob Brown House & Independence Homes invites people to apply for housing and offers ways for the public and businesses to help.
