Indianapolis Recorder

Indianapolis Recorder is a renowned African American publication that has been empowering and supporting communities since its founding in 1895 by George P. Stewart and Will Porter. What started as a two-page church bulletin transformed into a weekly newspaper with a focus on local news and events, setting it apart from other Black newspapers at the time.

Over the years, Indianapolis Recorder has reported on national events as well, making it a valuable source of information and a forum for advertisers. The newspaper has played a significant role in advocating for social reforms, addressing important issues such as lynching, public accommodations, voting rights, unemployment, crime, and healthcare. It has also highlighted the achievements of individuals and organizations within the community.

Indianapolis Recorder actively participated in relief efforts and supported American involvement in World War I and World War II. Today, under the leadership of publisher William G. Mays, the newspaper continues to thrive, focusing on reputation, quality, integrity, and financial stability.

The publication has embraced technological advancements and implemented business policies and procedures to ensure a zero-defect paper. In addition to its print edition, Indianapolis Recorder also offers the Recorder On Air Report (ROAR), a news roundup segment that airs locally several times a week. With its commitment to the community and dedication to delivering high-quality journalism, Indianapolis Recorder remains a trusted source of news and information for African Americans in Indianapolis and beyond
