About WRI Restoration
Initiative 20x20 is a transformative, country-led initiative aimed at combating land degradation in Latin America and the Caribbean by restoring and protecting 50 million hectares of landscapes, including forests and farms, by 2030. Launched at COP 20 in 2014, this ambitious project aligns with global efforts like the Bonn Challenge and the New York Declaration on Forests. So far, it has secured commitments from 18 countries and aims to improve over 52 million hectares through various restoration techniques.
The initiative emphasizes sustainable agricultural practices and agroforestry, which not only enhance biodiversity but also contribute significantly to local economies by boosting agricultural yields. By transitioning landscapes into carbon sinks, Initiative 20x20 seeks to combat climate change and preserve the region's rich biodiversity, which accounts for approximately 50% of the world’s species. Supported by over 85 technical organizations and more than $3 billion in private investments, Initiative 20x20 embodies a collaborative approach to a sustainable environmental future, promoting resilience and ecological restoration across Latin America.
