About InJamaica
Jamaica, also known as Xaymaca, is an island country located in the Caribbean Sea. It is the third-largest island of the Greater Antilles and the fourth-largest island country in the Caribbean. Jamaica has a rich history, previously inhabited by the indigenous Arawak and Taíno people before coming under Spanish rule.
The island's indigenous people referred to it as Xaymaca, meaning the "Land of Wood and Water" or the "Land of Springs". Throughout its history, Jamaica has experienced Spanish and British rule, with the British transforming it into a leading sugar exporter reliant on African slaves. After emancipation, the island welcomed Indian and Chinese indentured laborers.
Jamaica gained its independence from Great Britain in 1962. Today, Jamaica is divided into 14 parishes, grouped into three counties: Cornwall, Middlesex, and Surrey. The capital, Kingston, serves as the smallest parish and the most populous city on the island, with Jamaicans residing worldwide due to emigration opportunities.
Jamaica is known for its national symbols, including the Jamaican Flag, Coat of Arms, National Bird (Doctor Bird), National Flower (Lignum Vitae), National Tree (Blue Mahoe), and National Fruit (Ackee)
