The Instituto Nacional de Salud (INS) is Colombia’s national public health institute, working to protect the population’s health through knowledge management, health surveillance and the provision of public health goods and services. Its work includes monitoring population health, analyzing risks, conducting research and supporting public health networks and institutions. The INS offers diagnostic testing for events of public health interest, external quality assessment programs, toxicological assessments for pesticides and technical opinions on agricultural pesticides. It also provides antivenoms, culture media and testing services using biomodels.
The institute supports professionals and public agencies with epidemiological reporting systems, data repositories, analytical tools and guidance for surveillance and outbreak investigations. Its resources include the National Health Observatory, a national health library, training courses and scientific publications, including the Biomédica journal and epidemiological bulletins. The INS also coordinates or supports networks for blood banks, organ and tissue donation, and public health knowledge. Through public information initiatives, it shares guidance on diseases and health risks, including yellow fever, measles, fungal infections and antimicrobial resistance.
