Inside my DNA

Inside My DNA is a heritage project exploring African Caribbean ancestry through DNA research, ancestral mapping and cultural storytelling. Its central multimedia project, “Where I’m From,” uses DNA evidence and digital maps to trace the journeys of one African Caribbean family and examine the histories behind their heritage. Presented through a series of infographics, the project connects pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial experiences while highlighting perspectives often missing from Black History education.

Created by Jennifer McTair, Inside My DNA aims to decolonise historical narratives and challenge stereotypes shaped by Britain’s imperial past. It also questions the assumption that race or ethnicity determines national identity, emphasising the shared history of human migration and the diverse contributions of people who have shaped Britain. The project draws on family culture and traditions, including the experience of an African Caribbean family living in West Yorkshire, to show how heritage can endure across borders. Through its research, blog and resources, Inside My DNA invites audiences to reconsider ancestry, identity and the stories used to understand where people are from.
