About Insight Cartography
Insight Cartography is the mapmaking and data-visualization work of Philip Kearney. The site presents original maps and accompanying analysis, with a focus on U. S.
population, cities, elections, and regional geography. Projects include maps of Texas’s population distribution, local support for Austin ballot propositions by precinct, and electoral results that treat abstention as a vote for “Nobody. ” Kearney’s series on U.
S. urban megaregions uses population-density thresholds and geographic analysis to examine how metropolitan areas connect, offering both a broad version and a more conservative “boring” version. The work explains its methods and data sources, including U.
S. Census Bureau information and census tracts, and discusses the choices and limitations involved in mapping complex regions. Excel is used for data management, ArcGIS Pro for mapping, and GIMP for final design.
Rather than presenting maps without context, Insight Cartography pairs visual results with accessible commentary about the underlying criteria, unexpected findings, and the role of subjectivity
