The Institute for Government is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee that works to make government more effective. It helps people working in government improve how it operates, while enabling people outside government to understand and engage with it. Its work focuses on the core institutions and processes of UK government, including the civil service, ministers, public bodies, public finances, policy making, parliament, regulation, devolution and public services.
The Institute produces research, reports, explainers, commentary, live blogs and practical trackers, including the Public Services Performance Tracker and Whitehall Monitor. Its analysis covers current policy and political developments, with publications and events examining issues such as government budgets, public service performance and relations with the European Union. The organisation also offers podcasts, online and in-person events, and learning and development through the IfG Academy. Its guidance and support are aimed at ministers and their teams, parliamentarians, civil servants, policy makers, researchers, and organisations across the public, private and voluntary sectors.
