Instituto Onça-Pintada (IOP) is a Brazilian nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving the jaguar and the ecosystems it helps sustain. Founded in 2002 by biologists Anah Jácomo and Leandro Silveira, the institute combines scientific research, field conservation, environmental education, and community partnerships. Its projects span Brazil’s major biomes, including the Amazon, Cerrado, Caatinga, Pantanal, and Atlantic Forest.
Work includes monitoring wild jaguar populations, protecting ecological corridors, reducing conflicts with human activities, and operating a conservation breeding facility. The IOP also rehabilitates and releases jaguars when appropriate, using GPS collars to monitor released animals. Its initiatives include research projects, the Jaguar Certificate for rural properties supporting conservation, and an ecovolunteering experience called Immersion in the World of Jaguars.
Supporters can donate, sponsor a jaguar, or purchase apparel and other items from the institute’s store. Based in rural Mineiros, Goiás, the IOP is not regularly open to public visits, though it offers occasional public events
