About Instituto Terra
Instituto Terra, founded by Lélia Wanick and Sebastião Salgado in 1998, is a prominent non-governmental organization dedicated to ecological restoration, environmental education, and sustainable rural development. Located in Aimorés, Minas Gerais, the institute originated from the dream of restoring the family’s former farmland into a vibrant forest. Over the past 26 years, Instituto Terra has gained global recognition for its impactful programs, focusing on the planting of native trees in the Atlantic Forest, which fosters environmental recovery and enhances the quality of life for local communities in the Rio Doce basin.
The institute also offers unique products, including a collection of exclusive merchandise and signed posters by Sebastião Salgado, available for purchase. Their initiatives, such as the Terra Doce program, promote the sustainable development of rural producers, while the NERE course provides technical education for aspiring environmental and rural technicians. Instituto Terra champions the restoration of ecosystems and the empowerment of local communities through education and sustainable practices
