International Receptionists’ Day is a worldwide initiative celebrating the professionalism and contribution of receptionists across hospitality, business and other organisations. Its purpose is to raise awareness of the receptionist’s role as often the first point of contact for customers and guests, encourage pride in the profession, and help employers recognise their teams’ achievements. The celebration began as National Receptionists’ Day in the United States in 1991.
It was introduced in the UK by Rapport in 2012, and grew into an international event as more countries joined. It is now observed in countries including the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Hong Kong and Australia, with support from AICR, an association representing front-of-house managers at leading hotels. The initiative provides ways for people and organisations to take part, including downloadable celebration materials and updates through social media.
In the UK, AICR also organises the Hotel Receptionist of the Year competition, while a separate competition recognises the Corporate Receptionist of the Year
