The Interoperable Building Box (IBB) is an open-source, cloud-native software project created in 2023 by the Coalition for Smarter Buildings (C4SB), with support from the Monday Live! think tank group. It aims to make building systems communicate securely and consistently with one another and with cloud resources, addressing fragmented infrastructure and the siloed design of many on-premises systems.
IBB provides an extensible software platform for physical or virtual servers in buildings. Applications run in standardized containers on a Kubernetes cluster, bringing cloud-native technologies to the building edge. Its open-source orchestration platform helps match system capabilities and supports a plug-and-play application environment, reducing the integration and maintenance burden for vendors and building integrators.
The project spans building operational technology, from IoT devices and gateways to cloud-based enterprise systems. Its resources include system and ecosystem overviews, technical articles, videos, demonstrations, and expert sessions. A network of partner organizations contributes expertise, implementation resources, and IBB-enabled products. The project welcomes users and contributors through its online repository and community.
