The Institute of Acoustics (IOA) is the UK’s professional body for people working in acoustics, sound, noise and vibration. It supports a broad professional community through specialist information, professional development, networking and public engagement. Its online resources cover more than 350 topics across ten areas, including building acoustics, environmental sound, noise and vibration engineering, speech and hearing, underwater acoustics, musical acoustics, electroacoustics, physical acoustics, policy and health, and measurement and instrumentation.

The Institute publishes news, guidance and information on current consultations, research and policy developments, with subjects ranging from environmental noise and sound insulation to fireworks, renewable energy projects and noise complaints. Members can access professional development opportunities, bulletins, a member directory, awards and routes to professional membership. The IOA also offers diploma and certificate courses, career guidance, student competitions, conferences, events and specialist groups, alongside regional branches and committee activities. Additional services include publications, conference proceedings, information about British Standards committees, and support through funds such as its Engineering Bursary Fund and Carer’s Fund.
