The International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) is a program established by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO in 1961. Its main purpose is to enhance marine research, exploitation, and development by facilitating the exchange of oceanographic data and information between participating Member States. With over 80 oceanographic data centers in as many countries, the IODE network has been able to collect, control the quality of, and archive millions of ocean observations, making them available to Member States.

The program now focuses on all ocean-related data, including physical oceanography, chemical, biological, and more. Through the use of international standards and modern technology, the IODE Program ensures the access, management, and long-term archival of marine data and information, supporting international scientific and operational marine programs. Additionally, the IODE Program actively promotes capacity building and works towards narrowing the digital divide between developing and developed regions.

As a service-oriented program, the IODE continues to strengthen cooperation with ocean research and monitoring programs to meet the data and information needs of these communities.
