The Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IO PAN) is a scientific research institution based in Sopot. Founded in 1983, it succeeded the Marine Station in Sopot, established in 1953. The Institute’s mission is to advance understanding of the marine environment and communicate knowledge that supports its protection and sustainable use. Its scientists and engineers conduct research and technological work, providing expertise and sharing findings and new technologies with the public and partners in both the public and private sectors.
IO PAN studies the Baltic Sea and the seas of the European Arctic. Its research covers the oceans’ role in climate change and its effects on European seas; natural and human-driven changes in the Baltic environment; evolving coastal ecosystems; and the genetic and physiological processes of marine organisms, including foundations for marine biotechnology. The Institute also offers a knowledge-transfer platform called FindFish and maintains resources such as a library search service, research publications, news, and job listings.
