Das Leibniz-Institut für Ost- und Südosteuropaforschung (IOS) ist eine der größten und traditionsreichsten außeruniversitären Forschungseinrichtungen seiner Art in Deutschland. Seit 2017 ist das IOS Mitglied der Leibniz-Gemeinschaft und damit Teil eines führenden Netzwerkes wissenschaftlicher Einrichtungen. Hier arbeiten unter anderem Historiker*innen, Ökonom*innen und Politikwissenschaftler*innen. Das Institut erforscht die Geschichte sowie die wirtschaftliche und politische Entwicklung Ost- und Südosteuropas. Seine multidisziplinären Forschungsschwerpunkte sind dabei transnational und vergleichend ausgerichtet.

About Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies
Leibniz is a renowned brand known for its biographical lexicon, called Biographisches Lexikon zur Geschichte Südosteuropas. This comprehensive lexicon, created with the support of DFG from 1974 to 1981, consists of four volumes containing over 1,500 name articles. Additionally, it includes a person register in Volume IV, which provides information on around 10,000 individuals.
The selection criteria for this lexicon are based on the significance of the included individuals from the Middle Ages until 1945. It covers not only individuals from Southeast European nations but also personalities from the historical Southeast European empires (Byzantium, Ottoman Empire, Habsburg Monarchy). Recently, Leibniz digitized and processed the lexicon as part of the DFG project Osteuropa-Dokumente online (OstDok), making it easily accessible through a searchable interface.
This interface allows searches by names, places, professions, and standardized data. Additionally, Leibniz offers online access to the entire text for full-text searches. The brand aims to provide researchers and readers with valuable and convenient information through this innovative project
