Iowa Bird

The Iowa Ornithologists’ Union is a community organization bringing together birders of all skill levels to enjoy and learn about Iowa’s wild birds. Its purpose is to develop birders by encouraging observation, identification, and reporting, while helping maintain a consistent, trusted historical record of birds in Iowa. The Union welcomes enthusiasts without requiring degrees, formal training, or prior experience, and invites people to join or renew their membership.

Through its resources and activities, the organization helps members learn about bird species and where and when to expect them. Information on finding birds highlights opportunities on Iowa’s public lands, while the Iowa Bird Life journal shares bird-related content with its readership. The Union also provides ways to report sightings, follow announcements, and take part in scheduled birding events, including Christmas Bird Counts across the state. Its website features photographs of Iowa’s birds and links to its social media channels. Whether someone is new to birding or already experienced, the Iowa Ornithologists’ Union offers a place to build knowledge, contribute observations, and connect with others who share an interest in birds.
