About IPBES
IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) is an independent intergovernmental body established by 94 governments to enhance the science-policy interface for biodiversity and ecosystem services conservation. It is not a United Nations body, but it receives secretariat services from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). With a Plenary governing body, IPBES consists of member states, observers, and stakeholders who contribute to and benefit from its work.
The Multidisciplinary Expert Panel oversees scientific and technical functions, while the Bureau manages administrative tasks. IPBES works in four areas: assessments, policy support, capacity building, and communications and outreach. Their outputs, such as the thematic assessment on Pollinators, provide policy-relevant knowledge.
Findings show the significance of pollinators in global food production and the threats they face. Safeguarding these vital species requires diverse habitats, sustainable agriculture, education, decreased pesticide exposure, and improved bee husbandry. Engaging with IPBES is possible through different avenues, including being an expert contributor, supporting capacity building, and participating in communication and outreach initiatives.
