IPEMAR

IPEMAR, the Institute for Marine Research, Architecture and Renewable Resources, is an organization dedicated to advancing mariculture in Brazil. Its work focuses on developing research and technologies for marine infrastructure and production, supporting the preparation of public plans and policies for the sector, and encouraging wider adoption of mariculture. The institute’s areas of activity include marine research, environmental technologies, education, culture, architecture and urban planning.

IPEMAR develops and supports projects that connect sustainable production with community and environmental needs. Its Kamome project, for example, aims to strengthen scallop production in Ilha Grande Bay. The institute also promotes practical initiatives such as transforming discarded fishing nets into reusable bags, helping reduce plastic-bag use and the risk of marine pollution. Alongside research and project work, IPEMAR shares knowledge through training and public events, including courses on fish farming and shellfish cultivation, and supports seminars focused on mariculture. Its activities bring together research, education, environmental awareness and sector development to help build capacity for marine-based livelihoods.
