UNIRMCT, also known as the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, is a vital institution mandated to carry out crucial functions previously carried out by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). With a mission to maintain the legacies of these ad hoc international criminal courts, UNIRMCT strives to reflect the best practices in the field of international criminal justice. Established on 22 December 2010 by the United Nations Security Council as a small, temporary and efficient structure, the Mechanism began its operations on 1 July 2012 in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania, and on 1 July 2013 in The Hague, the Netherlands.

While initially operating in parallel with ICTR and ICTY, it continued as an independent institution following their closures. UNIRMCT ensures that the closure of the pioneering ad hoc tribunals does not create any loopholes for impunity. By engaging in a range of functions, such as court proceedings, visits, and defence counsel assignments, it upholds international criminal justice and stands as a testament to the commitment against impunity.
