Island Care Christmas Island

Island Care is a passionate, community-led organisation working with the people of Christmas Island to celebrate and protect the island’s distinctive natural environment. Guided by the values of educating, motivating and advocating, it brings together local residents, schools, volunteers and partners to support lasting environmental care.

Its work focuses on three key areas. Island Care organises beach cleanups, encourages responsible waste management and advocates for action to reduce marine debris and protect marine biodiversity. It also helps safeguard the island’s iconic red crabs and other endemic species through habitat restoration, migration traffic management, crab crossings and community awareness campaigns. Its seabird program includes monitoring, volunteer training, protection of nesting sites, assistance for injured birds and habitat restoration, with support for the Seabird Rescue Centre.

The organisation raises funds by selling natural history books, T-shirts and stickers, while sharing awareness of the island’s natural resources. Island Care has also received Australian Government Our Marine Parks Grants funding, managed by Parks Australia, for a community bird conservation project.
