About Isle La Motte
Isle La Motte is a historic island located in Vermont's Oldest Settlement and is the northernmost of the Champlain Islands. Spanning 7 miles in length and 2 miles in width, Isle La Motte is nestled close to the point where Lake Champlain meets the Richelieu River. With a rich history dating back to 1666, when a French fort was constructed by Pierre de la Motte, this island holds deep historical significance.
One of its notable contributions is the export of exquisite dark fossil-laden limestone from Fisk Quarry, which was highly valued for its rarity and beauty. This unique black marble was used in notable landmarks, including the U. S.
Capitol building, the National Gallery of Art, and Radio City Music Hall. Isle La Motte was once a hub for orchards, vineyards, and dairy farms in the mid-1800s and later became connected to the mainland by a bridge. Today, it is home to around 500 residents and welcomes numerous tourists who are drawn to its stunning natural beauty, access to Lake Champlain, and attractions like St.
