The Indian Sign Language Research and Training Center (ISLRTC) is an autonomous institute established under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Government of India, with its foundation laid on October 4, 2011. It emerged from the advocacy of the Indian deaf community in the 2000s, responding to the urgent need for dedicated research and training in Indian Sign Language (ISL). Recognizing the challenges faced by deaf individuals, including the lack of resources, trained educators, and effective teaching methodologies, ISLRTC aims to promote ISL and enhance the skills of teachers and interpreters.

The center offers a variety of academic courses, including diploma programs focused on ISL, along with resources such as educational videos, dictionaries, and a directory of schools and certified interpreters. By addressing the communication barriers that the deaf community encounters, ISLRTC plays a vital role in fostering inclusion and empowerment, ensuring that deaf individuals receive the educational support and advocacy they deserve.
