Inter Services Selection Board (ISSB) has a rich history dating back to the pre-World War II era, when officer selection was based on discretion rather than a defined system. However, the experiences of the war led to the establishment of war office selection boards in 1942, which were later extended to British India in 1943 and eventually replaced with services selection boards in 1945. ISSB, as we know it today, emerged in 1952 in Pakistan, inheriting three services selection boards and growing to include multiple centers across the country.
ISSB plays a critical role in selecting future leadership for the Pakistan Defence Forces, focusing on individuals with the essential mental, moral, social, and dynamic qualities required for leadership in both peace and war. The board utilizes scientific methods for personality screening to ensure the right person is chosen for the right job, emphasizing the importance of leadership qualities unique to military personnel.
