The Global Invasive Species Database (GISD) is an information resource developed and managed by the Invasive Species Specialist Group (ISSG) of the IUCN Species Survival Commission. First developed in 2000 as part of a global initiative on invasive species led by the former Global Invasive Species Programme, the database supports the exploration of invasive species and their environmental impacts.
GISD offers searchable species records, with options to refine results by taxonomy, location, habitat or system, pathway, threatened species status, impact, management, and Environmental Impact Classification for Alien Taxa (EICAT) category. Its species archive presents EICAT assessments, ranging from Data Deficient and Minimal Concern to Massive, helping users explore the severity of impacts caused by animals, fungi, and plants living outside their natural ranges. The database also features information about the “100 of the worst” invasive species and includes examples such as Imperata cylindrica, Abelmoschus moschatus, and Miconia calvescens. The site has been redesigned with support from the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, Italy’s Ministry of the Environment, and ISPRA, the Institute for Environmental Protection and Research.
