IUGG

The International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) is a non-governmental international scientific organization founded in 1919 to strengthen collaboration among geoscientists. With 75 member countries as of 2026, it operates under the auspices of the International Science Council and represents national adhering bodies rather than individual members. Its federation brings together eight semi-autonomous scientific associations and additional inter-association commissions, spanning disciplines across Earth and space sciences.

IUGG promotes research into Earth and its space environment, provides scientific leadership on geoscientific challenges, and supports the exchange of knowledge for society. Its work includes coordinating regional and global scientific projects, encouraging scientific data services, informing science policy, and supporting international standards and cooperation. The organization convenes General Assemblies, symposia, commission and working-group meetings, where researchers discuss results and coordinate programs requiring international participation. It also shares research and organizational information through publications, annual reports, a yearbook, and special publication series. Through national committees and its associations, IUGG connects scientific communities worldwide and advocates for geoscience collaboration and its contributions to societal resilience and sustainable development.
