John A. Dailey is an author, Marine veteran, and speaker whose work draws on more than twenty years in the military, including service in special operations and tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. He joined the Marines at seventeen and later earned an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina Wilmington in 2018.
His debut memoir, Tough Rugged Bastards, recounts the formation, training, and 2004 Iraq deployment of Task Unit Raider, an early Marine special operations unit established after the September 11 attacks. Dailey tells the story of the men who built the unit from the ground up and its role in paving the way for the creation of Marine Forces Special Operations Command. The memoir combines military history with personal reflection on combat, service, and the human experience of war.
