The Jaguar Rescue Center (JRC) in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica is a remarkable organization dedicated to the welfare and conservation of animals in need. Founded by Italian herpetologist Sandro Alviani and Catalonian primatologist Encar Garcia, the JRC provides a temporary or permanent home for ill, injured, and orphaned animals. Their mission is to rehabilitate and release these animals back into their natural habitats.

With a focus on monkeys, sloths, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and other mammals, the JRC offers round-the-clock veterinary services and care to animals that would otherwise be unable to survive in the rainforest or the waters of the Caribbean. The center covers an area of approximately 22,000 square meters and can accommodate up to 160 animals on a temporary basis. The name Jaguar was chosen as a symbol of nature suffering from the threat of extinction, as the Jaguar is the most hunted endangered animal in the Americas.

The JRC also aims to be a hub for scientific research and study, attracting researchers from around the world to study the unique animals and ecosystems of the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Funding for the JRC comes from donations made through their website, guided tours of the center and the La Ceiba Natural Reserve, as well as occasional donations of medical supplies and goats’ milk.
