About jakushisha.net
The Japan Network of Persons with Low Vision is a self-advocacy organization founded in 1977 by people with low vision. Formerly known as the Research Group on Low Vision Issues, it works toward a society where people with low vision can live more comfortably and participate more fully. The organization raises awareness of experiences that may go unnoticed, including difficulty reading textbooks, seeing station signs, and navigating public spaces.
Its activities include sharing practical information about daily life, work, education, and accessibility; publishing proposals and guidance; and organizing events, online discussions, and community activities. The network has advocated for safer railway platforms, including the placement of tactile paving, and provides information on mobility and other concerns. It also offers resources such as a downloadable “How I See” card and a free smartphone app that help people explain their visual experiences. Publications, videos, articles, and links to relevant support organizations further help people learn about low vision.
