About James Randall
James Randall is an independent software engineer, writer, and game developer who builds tools, programming systems, and browser-based experiences. Describing himself as a tool-maker and system builder, Randall explores how software works by creating projects from the ground up, often drawing on classic games and hardware. His portfolio includes Onus, a programming language designed to help people assess AI-generated code, and Annhexation, a strategy game built for a short, approachable playthrough.
Other projects range from browser recreations of BBC Micro classics and a Star Trek-inspired game to a WebGPU shooter, a real-time path tracer, and an experimental 8-bit games console with an AI development kit. Randall also makes practical creative software, including drawing, voxel-model, sprite-editing, and sprite-packing tools for Mac and iOS. Alongside his projects, he publishes essays and technical deep dives on AI, compilers, rendering, neural networks, and building software from scratch.
His work combines hands-on engineering with experimentation, retro computing, and game design. Away from development, he enjoys spending time outdoors with his dog and cycling
