About The Martin Center
The James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal is a nonprofit institute dedicated to improving higher education in North Carolina and the nation. This independent 501(c)(3) organization, based in Raleigh, has been striving to enhance colleges and universities since 2003.
Formerly known as the John W. Pope Center for Higher Education Policy, the Martin Center aims to address the current challenges facing higher education. Their objectives include increasing the diversity of ideas taught on campuses, fostering respect for the institutions vital to economic prosperity and freedom, improving teaching quality and student commitment to learning, and promoting cost-effective administration and governance.
To achieve these goals, the Martin Center actively informs and engages parents, students, trustees, alumni, administrators, and taxpayers. They also serve as a watchdog for legislative and administrative governance. Recognizing that higher education in the United States, including North Carolina, has deviated from its core purpose, the Martin Center conducts studies and explores solutions in areas such as governance, curriculum, financing, access, accountability, faculty research, and administrative policies.
By advocating for limits on government interference, promoting voluntary means, and emphasizing accountability and competition, the Martin Center seeks to enhance the value and quality of higher education for all stakeholders
