About James Monroe Museum
The James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library is a historic museum in downtown Fredericksburg, Virginia, located on the former site of James Monroe’s law office. A National Historic Landmark since 1966, it is owned and operated by the University of Mary Washington. The museum preserves the country’s largest collection of memorabilia related to James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States, and offers visitors a window into his life and legacy.
Its exhibits feature artifacts and documents originally assembled from the Monroe family’s possessions and first displayed in 1927. The collection helps tell the story of Monroe’s presidency, including the nation’s westward expansion and the Monroe Doctrine, which opposed European interference in the independent governments of the Americas. Visitors can explore historical objects and learn about the people and events that shaped this period of American history. The museum also provides visitor orientation, with staff offering context for the displays and helping guests make the most of their visit.
