About Jane Austen Society UK
The Jane Austen Society UK is a membership organisation established in 1940 to foster appreciation and study of Jane Austen’s life, writing and times, as well as those of the Austen family. It brings together readers, researchers and admirers through a national network of branches, including groups in London, Hampshire, Kent, Cambridge, the Midlands, the North, Scotland and the South West. The Society offers talks by experts, branch meetings, online discussions and other events, alongside an annual conference and general meeting.
Its website supports members and prospective members with information about joining, membership benefits, Society governance and activities. Visitors can explore resources on Austen’s biography, novels and associated places, including Chawton, Steventon, Bath and Southampton. The Society also shares news, social media updates, annual reports, newsletters, book reviews and Society publications.
Further activities include a drama competition and opportunities to support the organisation. Through its events, publications and regional branches, the Society encourages informed engagement with Austen’s work and the historical world in which she and her family lived
