Jazz en de Walvis is a community-founded jazz festival in Amsterdam’s Eastern Docklands, created by residents of the Oostelijk Havengebied. It invites music lovers, architecture enthusiasts, local residents, jazz fans and families to explore the area’s islands while experiencing live music in distinctive settings. Concerts take place in homes and on boats opened to visitors by neighborhood residents, offering an intimate way to discover the city from a different perspective.
The festival’s format combines short performances, each lasting around half an hour, with a walking route between venues. Its varied program welcomes newcomers to jazz as well as experienced listeners. Past and featured performances include pop-up concerts by the Non Melting Ice Cream Band and Macha Saxophone Quartet, alongside a performance by Jan van Duikeren and Karel Boehlee. In addition to its main program, Jazz en de Walvis shares festival news, publishes schedules and offers information about previous editions. Visitors can sign up for its newsletter, and the organizers also seek volunteers.
