The Japan Biology Olympiad (JBO) is a nationwide biology competition for high school students and other young people, designed to help participants discover the fascination and wonder of life sciences. It also serves as the selection process for Japan’s representatives to the International Biology Olympiad (IBO). Through its annual qualifying round and national final, JBO challenges students with biology examinations, including practical laboratory tests, and offers opportunities to engage with research and meet peers who share their interests.

JBO provides resources to support learning and preparation, including past competition questions, explanations, guidance on practical skills, recommended books, and information about related university admissions and scholarships. Its website also shares competition news, participant experiences, alumni interviews, and details about the international olympiad and previous Japanese teams. The International Biology Olympiad brings together secondary-school students from around the world for practical and theoretical tests, while promoting biology education and the importance of biology to society and the natural environment.
