About Jewish Languages
The Jewish Language Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating the languages spoken and written by Jewish communities throughout history and around the world. Its mission is to strengthen connections across generations and communities while highlighting the diversity of the Jewish diaspora. The project shares information on more than 30 languages, including Yiddish, Ladino, Judeo-Arabic, Jewish English, Jewish Russian, and Jewish Malayalam. Many longstanding Jewish languages are endangered, so the organization works to document them and make their cultural heritage accessible.
The project offers language descriptions and educational resources such as dictionaries, maps, videos, statistics, learning materials, and answers to frequently asked questions. Visitors can explore online lectures, interviews, songs, and exhibits on topics including holidays, liturgy, women’s voices, and children’s literature. The organization also connects users with researchers and translators and provides services such as ancestry mapping, captioning, consultation, and translation. Through social media, events, and its Jewish Language Consortium, the project supports education and preservation.
