Situated in the Yudanaka Shibu Onsen area, in the northern part of Nagano Prefecture, the park is surrounded by steep cliffs and constantly billowing steam, earning it the name Hell's Valley. With an elevation of 850m, the harsh winter brings over 1 meter of snow, and temperatures can drop below -10℃, making it an environment as challenging as the northernmost limit for primates, the Shimokita Peninsula. At Jigokudani Monkey Park, you can observe the Japanese macaques in a natural habitat, without barriers separating you from them.

Unlike zoos, this park provides a space for these monkeys to live freely, showcasing their complex social behaviors. The monkeys come to the park attracted by the food provided by staff, however, they have their own range of several kilometers where they spend the majority of their lives. While the monkeys' winter bathing habits have gained international attention, there is much more to discover even when they do not soak in the hot springs.
