Joanne Intrator is an author and psychiatrist whose work brings together family history, psychology, and the pursuit of justice. The daughter of German Jewish refugees, she has long examined why people commit atrocities. After studying European history at Connecticut College, she earned her medical degree from Columbia University and completed a fellowship in Psychiatry and Law at Albert Einstein. Mentored by Dr. Robert Hare, she led pioneering brain-imaging research on well-defined psychopaths, published in The Journal of Biological Psychiatry.
Her memoir, Summoned to Berlin, recounts her effort to secure restitution for a Berlin property seized from her family by the Nazis in 1938. Prompted by questions her father asked on his deathbed, Intrator investigates the building’s history and the personal and historical forces surrounding the loss. The book has received an Honorable Mention in the Creative Nonfiction category of the 2025 North Street Book Prize. Intrator also shares writing and commentary through her blog, media appearances, and Psychology Today articles, addressing topics including political conviction, psychopathy, and the legacy of Nazi crimes.
