Johannesschule Gronau is a special education school serving children, young people and young adults with support needs in the area of intellectual development. Based in Gronau, it welcomes students from Ahaus, Heek, Gronau and Schöppingen, across cultural and religious backgrounds. The school provides individualised, holistic and strengths-based education, helping students develop their abilities and achieve as much independence as possible. Around 196 students, including those with complex disabilities, receive support across a range of learning and developmental needs.

Its programmes include intensive educational support, assisted communication, personal care, sensory and memory development, and support for students on the autism spectrum. The school uses structured routines and individually adapted learning materials, and works with external therapists providing occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech therapy. Trained school dogs Cleo and Tessa take part in selected lessons, activities and individual support. Physical education includes movement, games and swimming, with swimming lessons held weekly in the school’s therapy pool for specified grade levels.
