JOIDES Resolution, also known as JR, is a seagoing research vessel that plays a crucial role in understanding Earth's development. Equipped with advanced drilling capabilities, the ship collects core samples and measurements from beneath the ocean floor, providing scientists with valuable information about climate and environmental change throughout Earth's history. These core samples serve as a smoking gun for examining significant events like the extinction of dinosaurs and plate tectonics.

Named after HMS Resolution commanded by Captain James Cook, JOIDES Resolution continues the legacy of scientific exploration, delving deep into the mysteries of the ocean floor. The ship is operated by the JOIDES Resolution Science Operator (JRSO) and collaborates with scientists from institutions worldwide. With a complement of 50 scientists and technicians and 65 crew members, JR ensures that work never ceases, operating 24 hours a day.

Scientific drilling is crucial to understanding Earth's fundamental processes, and JOIDES Resolution plays a key role in advancing this research
