Joshua Rubenstein is an author, editor, activist, and independent scholar whose work focuses on human rights, international affairs, and Russian history. For more than four decades, he has brought particular expertise to Russian and Soviet affairs while maintaining a longstanding association with Harvard University’s Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies. His publications examine Soviet and Soviet Jewish history, the Soviet human rights movement, and the Holocaust in German-occupied Soviet territory.
They include biographies of revolutionary Leon Trotsky and writer Ilya Ehrenburg, as well as The Last Days of Stalin, first published by Yale University Press in 2016. The book explores Stalin’s final months, his campaign against Soviet Jews, and the political consequences of his death in 1953. It is available in paperback, audiobook, ebook, and foreign-language editions.
Rubenstein served on Amnesty International USA’s staff from 1975 to 2012 as an organizer and Northeast Regional Director. He is now Associate Director for Major Gifts at Harvard Law School. His website introduces his books, journal writing, and professional background
