Le Jour de la Nuit is a national public awareness event led by the French environmental association Agir pour l’environnement. Since its launch in 2008, it has brought together municipalities, associations, regional parks and local enthusiasts to address light pollution, protect nocturnal biodiversity and celebrate the beauty of the starry sky. Events take place across France and, since 2023, in Quebec.
The initiative is not a commercial product or service provider; it offers a public programme of activities and resources that communities can use to inform and engage residents. Organisers can register local events and find guidance through the website, while visitors can discover activities near them. The programme may include public-lighting switch-offs, guided night walks, stargazing sessions, talks, exhibitions, storytelling and performances.
These activities help people learn about the effects of artificial light on wildlife, human health, energy use and views of the night sky. By encouraging communities to experience darkness and reconsider unnecessary lighting, Le Jour de la Nuit supports public participation in protecting the natural night environment
