Juden in Bleckede

This website is an educational history project documenting Jewish life in Bleckede, a town in Lower Saxony, Germany. It traces a 200-year story beginning in the early 18th century, when Jewish families settled in the area, and describes their community, livelihoods, religious life, and changing fortunes. The site explains how Jewish residents contributed to local commerce and became more integrated during the 19th century, before economic change prompted migration and the Nazi era brought persecution and destruction.

It also highlights notable people, especially Kurt Löwenstein, a Bleckede-born reform educator and Social Democratic politician who went into exile in France in 1933. Visitors can learn about the former Jewish congregation, its places of worship and school, and the Jewish cemetery, including its history, damage, restoration, and later acts of vandalism. The project provides historical resources such as literature recommendations, links to related websites, and a talk about the cemetery as a place of learning.

Its purpose is to preserve local Jewish history and encourage remembrance through educational materials and community initiatives
