Julespelet

Det store Julespelet is a community-rooted outdoor Christmas musical presented in Julebygda, Norway, by Stiftelsen Julebygdspelet. First staged in 2010, the production combines theatre, singing and festive surroundings to tell the story of Mary and Joseph’s journey across Jæren. At its heart is a message about how people meet and treat one another, shaped by values of love, reconciliation and warmth.

The annual December event offers visitors more than a performance. Julebygda features a Christmas market with stalls selling handmade goods, including knitted items, decorations and other gifts, alongside seasonal treats and refreshments. Entry to the village is free, and tickets are available for the musical. The foundation also runs a “heart to heart” initiative, distributing performance tickets to groups and organisations whose work benefits others. Its related annual Christmas breakfast includes a guest speaker whose story connects with the event’s values. Through performance, local crafts and community initiatives, Det store Julespelet creates a welcoming Christmas experience for audiences and visitors.
