Julian Thirolf

Julian Thirolf Illustration is a freelance illustration and graphic design practice based in Mannheim, Germany, specializing in making historical content clear, engaging, and visually compelling. With more than ten years of professional experience and a background in art history, product design, and communication design, Julian Thirolf works with clients in culture, education, publishing, and media.

Services include historical illustration and reconstruction, explanatory graphics and maps, and 2D and 3D visualizations of spaces, buildings, and objects. The practice also develops visual concepts, look development, and image packages for exhibitions, publications, educational materials, and documentary productions, including moving-image formats. Projects begin with understanding the subject, audience, and intended medium, then draw on available sources, findings, plans, and expert input. Clear distinctions are made between documented information, plausible reconstruction, and creative interpretation, with uncertainties discussed with project specialists. This collaborative approach helps turn complex material into images that are informative, atmospheric, and appropriate for professional use. Julian Thirolf also supports clients in early project stages, helping shape visual direction and presentation formats.
