Katherine Dale is a North Carolina-based spatial ecologist and data scientist whose work connects marine ecology with transportation safety and active mobility. Guided by an interest in how people and animals move through space, she studies fish populations while advocating for safer, more accessible streets and climate-resilient communities. Dale earned a PhD in marine ecology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami. Her research has included examining geographic and seasonal shifts in fish spawning off the west coast of North America.
Today, Dale works as Programs Manager for Oaks & Spokes and as Safe Routes to School Coordinator for the Town of Winterville, North Carolina. In these roles, she supports community programming and infrastructure improvements that help make travel safer for young people and other road users. Her website also features outreach and educational initiatives, including geocaching activities, a mollusk coloring book, classroom resources, and mentorship. Alongside her scientific and advocacy work, Dale shares art, photography, textiles, and commissioned creative projects.
