Kakaran

Kakaran is a small Dutch foundation that has enabled children in Senegal to access education for more than thirty years. Its name means “learning” in Diola, one of Senegal’s official languages. The foundation believes schooling supports personal opportunity and the development of communities, yet many children face barriers such as school costs, family work responsibilities, or distance from a school. Kakaran connects support from Dutch donors with children’s educational needs, helping them pursue schooling and earn qualifications that can improve their future prospects and those of their families.

The foundation works closely with three local contacts in Ziguinchor, Tambacounda, and Mbour. Its support can include school supplies and equipment, such as backpacks, learning materials, or computers, as illustrated by students’ accounts. Kakaran also shares pupil stories and information about Senegal’s education system and its projects. People can contribute through one-time or regular donations, become ongoing supporters, or organise fundraising activities. The organisation is informed by board members’ personal experience of Senegalese society and works in collaboration with its local contacts.
