Kalkars Ordbog is an esteemed reference for those studying the Danish language as it existed from 1300 to 1700. Created by Otto Kalkar, this comprehensive dictionary features over 60,000 entries and is the only resource that covers Danish across these four centuries in depth. Originally compiled in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the dictionary has now been made available online for the first time, allowing users to easily access and explore historical Danish vocabulary and its evolution.
The site, kalkarsordbog.dk, is developed by Det Danske Sprog- og Litteraturselskab and employs a user-friendly platform that enhances the usability of the original work. Online features include advanced search options that facilitate the discovery of words and their variants, making it a valuable tool for scholars, linguists, and anyone interested in historical Danish texts. The site continues to improve, linking to other dictionaries and correcting errors to ensure a seamless user experience.
